Ancient
The Ancient is the main structure in each team’s base; destroying the enemy Ancient is the final objective that wins a Dota 2 match.
What is Ancient in Dota 2?
Each team has an Ancient at the center of its base. It is the structure that ultimately matters more than kills, gold or any other advantage: a team wins when the opposing Ancient is destroyed. The Ancient is protected by the deepest layers of the base, including the final defensive towers, so reaching it usually requires winning control of the map and breaking through multiple structures first.
Players also call the Ancient the throne, a long-standing term inherited from earlier Dota. In modern Dota 2, Ancient can also describe neutral creeps and camps, so the surrounding context determines whether someone means the base structure or a neutral unit category.
How Ancient is used in a match
Teams usually talk about the Ancient when a game can be ended or when the base is under immediate threat. After a decisive fight, the winning side may ignore additional kills or farm and go directly for the Ancient if the path is open. Defenders may buy back, teleport home or abandon another objective because protecting the Ancient takes priority over almost everything else.
Calls such as “go throne” or “hit Ancient” mean the team should focus the final structure rather than chase heroes or take another barracks. The decision is often about time: if enemy heroes are about to respawn, securing the Ancient can be safer than extending the fight.
Do not confuse Ancient with...
Do not confuse the Ancient building with Ancient neutral creeps or Ancient camps. The building is the match-winning objective in the base; Ancient creeps are a category of powerful neutral units found in camps.
