Area of Effect (AoE)
Area of Effect, or AoE, describes an ability, attack, or effect that influences multiple points or units inside a defined area instead of only one direct target.
What is Area of Effect (AoE) in Dota 2?
AoE is a general description of spatial coverage. A circular spell around a point, a line-shaped ability, a cone, an aura, or a ground zone can all be area effects even though their geometry is different. Players also use “AoE” to discuss the size of the affected area, such as whether an ability can catch several heroes standing close together.
Some game systems can increase the radius or width of eligible area effects, but the exact interaction depends on the ability. Cast range and AoE are also separate properties: cast range determines how far away the player can place or target the effect, while AoE determines how much space the effect covers once used.
How Area of Effect (AoE) is used in a match
AoE matters most when units are grouped. A well-placed area disable can control several heroes at once, while an AoE damage spell can punish a team that stands too close together. This is why players spread before certain initiations and why teams often try to force enemies into narrow terrain before committing their strongest area abilities.
AoE also affects farming and pushing. An area spell that clears several creeps at once can accelerate wave control, but spending it on the wave may leave the hero without that tool if a fight begins immediately afterward.
Do not confuse Area of Effect (AoE) with...
AoE is not cast range. A spell can have long cast range but a small affected area, or short cast range but a large area around the caster. AoE is also broader than cleave or splash, which are specific attack-based ways to spread damage.
