Aura
An aura is a persistent area-based effect emitted by a unit or item source that affects eligible units while they are within the aura’s effective range.
What is Aura in Dota 2?
Auras continuously apply their effect around a source rather than requiring the source to cast on every affected unit individually. Depending on the aura, the effect may benefit allies, weaken enemies, modify a stat, provide regeneration, change movement or attack properties, or apply another ongoing modifier.
Aura rules are source-specific. Different auras can affect different unit types and may interact differently when several copies or related effects are present. Some aura effects linger briefly after a unit leaves the area, while others disappear immediately. For that reason, it is safer to treat “aura” as a delivery mechanic rather than assume that every aura stacks or expires in exactly the same way.
How Aura is used in a match
Aura positioning matters because the source usually needs to stay within a useful distance of the units it wants to affect. A durable hero carrying a team aura item may try to remain near several allies during a fight, while a hero with an offensive aura may pressure enemies simply by occupying the right area.
Teams can also play around aura sources by forcing them away, killing the carrier, or spreading far enough that fewer units are affected. This makes an aura valuable not only for its listed bonus or penalty, but also for the formation it encourages during fights and pushes.
Do not confuse Aura with...
An aura is not simply any buff or debuff. Buff and debuff describe beneficial or harmful effects on a unit, while aura describes a way those effects are projected from a source over an area.
