Bait

Bait is a deliberate attempt to make an opponent commit to an apparently favorable target or situation so that the baiting team can punish the response.

What is Bait in Dota 2?

Bait is a tactical setup built around temptation. A player or team presents something that looks vulnerable, valuable or easy to contest, while keeping a prepared response nearby. The bait may be a low-health hero, an exposed support, a visible objective attempt, an apparently isolated core or even an area of the map that seems safe to enter.

The important part is that the apparent opportunity is not the whole story. Allies may be hidden in fog, a defensive item may still be available, buyback may be ready, or the baiting team may be waiting for the opponent to cross a choke point. Good bait creates a decision that looks attractive enough to draw commitment without sacrificing the baited player or objective for no gain.

How Bait is used in a match

Teams use bait when they want the enemy to reveal position, spend important abilities or move into a disadvantageous area. A support can show on a dangerous wave while teammates wait behind them; a team can start Roshan briefly to force opponents toward the pit; or a core can stay visible with defensive resources ready while allies prepare a counter-initiation.

The tactic works best when the response is planned before the enemy commits. If the baiting side is too far away, lacks vision or cannot punish the first move, the bait simply becomes a real loss. Players therefore judge distance, cooldowns, fog and escape routes before offering the target.
