Barrier
A damage barrier is a shield with its own capacity that absorbs qualifying incoming damage before that damage is taken from the unit’s health.
What is Barrier in Dota 2?
A barrier protects a unit by absorbing damage into a separate pool. Dota 2 has barriers that apply to specific damage types and barriers that can absorb all damage types. Once a barrier’s capacity is used up, further qualifying damage can reach the unit normally unless another defense stops it.
Barriers are processed as part of the damage calculation and can coexist with armor, magic resistance, block, and other defensive effects. The exact order and stacking behavior depend on the barrier category and source, so “barrier” is best understood as a capacity-based shield rather than a universal percentage reduction.
How Barrier is used in a match
Barriers are most useful when timed before a predictable damage window. A shield applied just before an initiation can absorb the first part of a combo and give the protected hero time to use abilities, reposition, or receive another save.
Players also watch which damage type a barrier covers. A magical barrier does little against a physical-focused threat, while an all-damage barrier is broader but may be balanced by a different capacity or duration.
Do not confuse Barrier with...
A barrier is not the same as damage block or armor. Barriers have a capacity that is depleted by absorbed damage. Damage block removes a defined amount from qualifying hits, while armor and Magic Resistance scale damage through resistance.
