Break
Break is a status effect that disables passive hero ability components for its duration, reducing the value of heroes whose defense, damage, or utility depends on passives.
What is Break in Dota 2?
Break temporarily disables passive ability components on the affected unit. This can remove access to passive procs, defensive effects, innate passive bonuses, or other automatic ability behavior while the break lasts. The exact result depends on the passive, because some interactions have explicit exceptions.
Break does not normally disable passive effects granted by items, and it does not prevent the target from casting active abilities or using items. Effects already applied before the break may also continue if they exist independently of the disabled passive.
How Break is used in a match
Break is strongest against heroes whose identity is built around powerful passives. Instead of trying to overpower those defenses directly, a team can apply break and use the short window to burst the hero before the passive returns.
Players need to identify which part of an enemy kit is actually passive. Applying break to a hero whose important tools are active spells may have little impact, while the same effect against a passive-dependent frontliner can completely change a fight.
Do not confuse Break with...
Break is not silence and not mute. Break disables passive ability components; silence blocks active hero abilities; mute blocks active item use. A broken hero can normally still cast spells, attack, move, and use items.
