Buff
A buff is a beneficial status effect that improves a unit in some way, such as increasing a stat, granting protection, improving movement, or adding another temporary advantage.
What is Buff in Dota 2?
A buff is a positive effect applied to a hero or another unit. Buffs can come from abilities, items, auras, runes, or other game systems, and the exact benefit depends on the source. A buff may raise a stat, add movement or attack speed, provide regeneration, grant a defensive effect, or enable a special mechanic for a limited time.
“Buff” describes the effect on the unit, not one fixed type of mechanic. Some buffs can be removed by a dispel, while others cannot, and aura-based effects follow their own rules. A unit can also have several buffs at the same time if their sources are compatible.
How Buff is used in a match
Players track important buffs because they can change whether a fight is favorable. A temporary defensive buff may let a core survive an initiation, while an offensive buff can create a short window for a push, Roshan attempt, or teamfight. Recognizing when a strong enemy buff is active is often as important as using your own.
The same word is also used in balance discussions when an update makes a hero, item, or ability stronger. In a live match, however, “buff” usually refers to a beneficial effect currently applied to a unit.
Do not confuse Buff with...
A buff is the opposite of a debuff. It is also different from a heal: healing restores current health, while a buff may improve many different properties and may not restore health at all. In patch discussion, “a buff” can also mean a balance increase rather than a status effect.
