Build

A build is the combination of items, skill choices and talents used to shape how a Dota 2 hero develops and performs during a match.

What is Build in Dota 2?

Build describes the development plan chosen for a hero. It most commonly refers to item progression, but players also use the word for skill leveling, talents and the overall way a hero is configured for a particular match. A build can emphasize damage, survivability, mobility, farming speed, initiation, team utility or a mixture of several goals.

There is rarely one universally correct build. Dota 2 changes through patches, and even within the same patch the best choices can depend on lane matchup, enemy damage types, available farm and what the team already provides. A standard build is useful as a starting point, but strong players adjust when the game requires a different answer.

How Build is used in a match

Players discuss builds before and during matches because item order determines when a hero becomes ready to fight or farm. A carry may choose an acceleration item when given space, then switch toward survivability after seeing heavy control. An offlaner may skip personal damage for an early team item if the lineup needs to group sooner.

Skill and talent choices follow the same logic. A hero can level a defensive spell earlier in a difficult lane or prioritize wave clear when the team needs to defend structures. The build therefore reflects both the hero's natural strengths and the specific problems presented by the match.

Do not confuse Build with...

Do not confuse build with draft. A draft selects the heroes that form the lineup; a build determines how one of those heroes develops through skills, talents and items.
