Burst Damage

Burst damage is a large amount of damage delivered in a short window, usually to remove or heavily weaken a target before they can react or receive help.

What is Burst Damage in Dota 2?

Burst damage describes the speed and concentration of damage rather than a separate damage type. A burst sequence can contain physical, magical, pure, or mixed damage. What makes it “burst” is that a meaningful amount arrives in a short period instead of being spread across a long fight.

Burst can come from one powerful ability, several abilities used together, a critical attack, item actives, or coordinated damage from multiple heroes. Because the concept is about time, the same total damage can be burst in one situation and sustained damage in another.

How Burst Damage is used in a match

Teams use burst damage to remove an important hero before defensive spells, healing, repositioning, or reinforcements can change the fight. It is especially effective after a stun, hex, or other disable creates a short window in which the target cannot respond.

Burst is also a resource-management problem. Spending every major cooldown on one target can win a fight instantly, but it can leave the team without damage for the next target. Good burst execution balances speed with the minimum resources needed to secure the kill.

Do not confuse Burst Damage with...

Burst damage is not a damage type like physical, magical, or pure. DPS usually describes damage output over time, while burst describes how much damage can be concentrated into a short window.
