Captain's Draft

Captain's Draft is a captain-led Dota 2 mode where teams pick and ban from a limited randomly generated hero pool instead of the full eligible roster.

What is Captain's Draft in Dota 2?

Captain's Draft keeps the strategic structure of a captain-controlled draft but restricts both teams to a smaller randomly selected hero pool. Each team has a captain who manages bans and picks from that shared set, forcing both sides to adapt to what is available rather than prepare around the entire roster.

That restricted pool is the defining difference from Captain's Mode. Exact pool sizes, phase order and timing rules can change, so the mode is best understood as a limited-pool captain draft rather than by memorizing one historical sequence.

How Captain's Draft is used in a match

Teams in Captain's Draft must identify the strongest combinations inside the offered pool quickly. A hero that would be a secondary option in Captain's Mode may become first-priority when its usual counters are missing, while a preferred strategy may be impossible because one required hero never entered the pool.

The captain therefore balances immediate picks, bans and denial value with the risk of running out of heroes that fit the lineup. The mode rewards flexibility and broad hero knowledge.
