Captain's Mode
Captain's Mode is a Dota 2 draft mode where one captain on each team controls hero bans and picks, making it the standard format for organized competitive drafting.
What is Captain's Mode in Dota 2?
Captain's Mode turns hero selection into a team-level strategy led by one player on each side. Captains alternate through ban and pick phases to build a five-hero lineup while denying important options to the opponent. Because choices are centralized, the mode allows coordinated drafting around lanes, teamfight, damage types, timings and specific hero interactions.
The exact sequence and timing of draft phases can be changed by game updates or tournament rules, so the lasting concept is captain-controlled picks and bans from the eligible competitive hero pool. Captain's Mode is widely used in professional and organized Dota because it gives both teams deliberate strategic control before the match starts.
How Captain's Mode is used in a match
A captain may first secure a flexible hero that hides the team’s lanes, ban a counter to an intended strategy or delay a key core pick until more of the opponent’s lineup is visible. Each selection changes the value of the heroes that remain.
Teammates still contribute by suggesting picks, matchups and comfort heroes, but the captain commits the final choices. This creates a clear difference from normal public drafts where each player controls their own hero selection.

Do not confuse Captain's Mode with Captain's Draft. Captain's Mode uses the eligible competitive hero pool, while Captain's Draft restricts both teams to a smaller randomly generated pool.
