Carry (Position 1)
Carry, or Position 1, is the team role with the highest farm priority. The carry converts gold and experience into scaling damage, survivability, and objective pressure.
What is Carry (Position 1) in Dota 2?
The carry is Position 1 in the common Dota 2 farm-priority system. Position 1 receives the highest long-term priority on safe waves, neutral camps, and other reliable sources of gold because the team expects that investment to become especially valuable later. Carries often scale strongly with items and levels, but they do not all play the same way or reach their strongest point at the same time.
A carry commonly starts in the safe lane with support, although lane assignments can change with matchups and drafts. The term describes resource priority and expected contribution more than a fixed hero class. Some carries focus on sustained hero damage, while others win through illusions, mobility, building damage, or strong objective control.
How Carry (Position 1) is used in a match
A carry constantly balances farming against joining team actions. Before a key item or level, taking safe farm may be more valuable than forcing a low-percentage fight. Once an important power spike is reached, the same hero may become the team's best reason to take Roshan, push a tower, or contest enemy territory.
For example, the team may create pressure on one side of the map while Position 1 clears safe waves and finishes an item. When that item is completed, the carry joins the next objective instead of continuing to farm automatically.
Do not confuse Carry (Position 1) with...
Carry is a specific position with the highest farm priority. Core is a broader term that usually includes Positions 1, 2, and 3. A carry also does not have to be the only damage dealer on the team.
Hard Carry
A hard carry is a carry whose effectiveness scales especially strongly with time, levels, and a large amount of farm.
Hard carry is an informal subtype rather than a separate numbered position. The label is usually used for heroes that may need substantial resources before they become the main late-game threat. The boundary between a carry and a hard carry depends on the hero, draft, build, and current balance of the game.
