Cleave and Splash

2 min readWinio Team

Cleave and splash are attack modifiers that spread damage from a primary attack to additional units, but they use different shapes and secondary-hit behavior.

What is Cleave and Splash in Dota 2?

Cleave and splash both extend attack damage beyond the primary target. Cleave typically sends secondary damage through an area extending behind or around the attacked target in relation to the attacker. Splash usually spreads damage in a circular area around the target or impact point.

The primary attack still determines whether the secondary effect occurs, and the exact amount and geometry depend on the source. These mechanics are closely related but not interchangeable: a position that is safe from a cleave shape may still be inside a splash radius, and vice versa. Their interaction with other attack modifiers also follows attack-system rules rather than ordinary spell AoE rules.

How Cleave and Splash is used in a match

Cleave and splash let attack-based heroes damage groups without manually switching targets. They are useful for clearing creep waves, farming stacked camps, pressuring illusions or summons, and punishing enemies who stand too close to the primary target.

Positioning around these effects matters in teamfights. A support standing behind a frontline hero can still take cleave damage even if the attacker never targets the support directly. Against splash, separating from the primary target or impact point can reduce the number of units hit by each attack.

Do not confuse Cleave and Splash with...

Cleave and splash are not generic AoE spells. They are attack-based secondary damage mechanics. Cleave and splash also differ from each other in the geometry used to reach secondary targets.
