Cooldown

A cooldown is the period after an ability or item is used during which that same action cannot normally be used again until the cooldown finishes or is modified.

What is Cooldown in Dota 2?

Cooldowns limit how frequently powerful actions can be repeated. When an ability or active item enters cooldown, its remaining time must expire before the player can normally use it again. Different abilities and items have different cooldown lengths, and some sources can reduce, increase, reset, or otherwise modify those timers.

Cooldown is separate from mana cost. A spell can have enough mana available but still be unusable because it is on cooldown, or it can be ready off cooldown while the hero lacks the mana to cast it. Charges and charge-replenishment systems are also related but follow their own rules.

How Cooldown is used in a match

Cooldown tracking is one of the main ways teams identify timing windows. If an enemy uses a long-cooldown defensive spell, the next engagement may be easier before it returns. If a team’s own initiation is unavailable, forcing a fight immediately may be a mistake even when everyone is alive.

Players also sequence abilities around cooldowns during farming and skirmishes. Using a short-cooldown spell early may allow it to become available again before the fight ends, while holding it too long can reduce the number of times it can be used.

Do not confuse Cooldown with...

Cooldown is not mana cost, cast time, or channel time. Cooldown controls when the action becomes available again; the other concepts govern the resource or timing of the cast itself.

Cooldown Reduction (CDR)

Cooldown Reduction (CDR) is any mechanic that shortens qualifying cooldowns, letting affected abilities or items become available again sooner.

Cooldown reduction can be percentage-based or can modify specific cooldowns by a flat amount, depending on the source. Some modifiers affect the cooldown that begins after the next use, while other effects can change a cooldown that is already running. Because stacking and timing rules differ by source, players should evaluate the exact modifier rather than treating every CDR effect as identical.
