Core

A core is a hero with relatively high priority for gold and experience who is expected to turn those resources into a major source of damage, pressure or teamfight impact.

What is Core in Dota 2?

Core is an umbrella term for the resource-priority heroes around which a Dota 2 lineup is usually built. In the common position system, positions 1, 2 and 3 are generally treated as cores, although their exact jobs differ. The carry usually receives the highest farming priority, the midlaner often converts early levels into tempo, and the offlaner commonly provides initiation, frontline presence or map pressure.

Being a core does not mean a hero must top the damage chart or farm constantly. The defining idea is that the team invests meaningful gold and experience into the hero because its items and levels are expected to unlock important parts of the game plan. A utility-oriented offlaner can therefore be a core even when a support deals more damage in a particular fight.

How Core is used in a match

Teams use the word core when discussing farm distribution, deaths, item timings and which heroes should occupy safe parts of the map. If a wave is dangerous, a support may take it while a core farms a safer area; if a fight is about to start, the team may delay until a core finishes a key item.

The label is also useful when talking about lineups. A draft may have greedy cores that all need time to farm, or active cores that become useful with fewer items and want to fight earlier. Good resource distribution gives each core enough space to reach the timing that the lineup needs.

Do not confuse Core with...

Do not confuse core with carry. Carry usually refers specifically to position 1 and the highest farming priority, while core is the broader group that normally includes positions 1, 2 and 3.
