Counter-pick
A counter-pick is a hero selected because its abilities, lane matchup or strategic strengths are especially effective against an enemy hero or lineup.
What is Counter-pick in Dota 2?
Counter-picking means choosing a hero after considering what the opponent has already revealed. The goal is to create a favorable interaction: a hero may punish the enemy’s lane, prevent an important escape, survive a preferred damage type, remove illusions, interrupt channeling or otherwise make part of the opposing strategy harder to execute.
A counter-pick is rarely an automatic win. Dota 2 matchups depend on lanes, player skill, itemization, team support and the other eight heroes in the game. A strong theoretical counter can still be a poor choice if it breaks the team’s own roles or requires resources the lineup cannot provide.
How Counter-pick is used in a match
In organized drafts, teams often save some later picks to see more of the opponent’s lineup before committing to a core hero. A late counter-pick can change a lane matchup or force the opponent to alter its original role assignment.
In pubs, players also use counter-picks after seeing enemy heroes, but the same trade-off applies: solving one matchup should not leave the team without initiation, damage, wave clear or a workable support structure.
Do not confuse Counter-pick with...
Do not confuse counter-pick with counterplay. A counter-pick happens during hero selection; counterplay is the broader set of in-game decisions, items and tactics used to answer an opponent.
