Courier

A courier is a personal unit that transports items between shops, the stash and a player’s hero, allowing the hero to receive purchases without returning to base.

What is Courier in Dota 2?

Every player begins a normal Dota 2 match with a personal courier. The courier can collect items from the stash or shops and deliver them to its owner, which is essential for maintaining lane presence and keeping item timings efficient. The courier develops additional movement or utility features as the owner's hero gains levels, and its exact statistics or unlock timings can change between patches.

The courier is a real unit on the map rather than a menu abstraction. It can be moved, intercepted and killed under the current courier rules. When a courier is unavailable, the owner temporarily loses convenient access to items being transported, which can delay an important component or consumable.

How Courier is used in a match

Players use the courier to bring regeneration, small components and completed items while continuing to farm or pressure a lane. Efficient courier control reduces unnecessary travel and lets a hero respond to a new item timing immediately.

Courier movement also carries risk. Sending it through a dangerous river or visible enemy area can reveal the delivery path and give the opponent a chance to kill it. Players therefore route the courier around known threats and avoid leaving valuable or urgent items exposed longer than necessary.

The courier transports items; it is not a hero and it does not replace the stash or shops. “Chicken” and “chick” are historical slang names that remain understandable, while the old shared-team courier system is not the current standard.
