Damage
Damage is any game effect that reduces a unit’s current health. In Dota 2, damage is classified by both its source and its damage type, which determine how defenses interact with it.
What is Damage in Dota 2?
Damage is the general term for health lost because of attacks, abilities, items, or other game effects. A damage instance can come from an attack or from a spell-like source, and it also carries a damage type. The three main damage types are physical, magical, and pure. Those layers matter because the same-looking hit can interact very differently with armor, magic resistance, barriers, immunity, and other defensive mechanics.
Players often use “damage” more broadly than the engine does. In conversation it can mean a hero’s attack damage, a spell’s listed damage, total damage dealt in a fight, or a team’s ability to kill a target. For a glossary definition, the useful distinction is that damage is the health-reducing result, while attack damage, spell damage, and the three damage types describe how that result is produced and processed.
How Damage is used in a match
Damage determines whether a trade, gank, teamfight, or objective attempt is realistic. Before committing, players compare their available damage with the target’s health and defenses, then consider whether key abilities are ready and whether the target can heal, escape, or reduce incoming damage.
A team may have enough raw damage to kill a hero on paper but still fail if most of it is physical into high armor, magical into strong magic resistance, or spread over too long a window. Good decisions therefore consider not only “how much damage” a lineup has, but what kind of damage it deals and how quickly it can apply it.
Do not confuse Damage with...
Damage is not the same as attack damage. Regular attacks usually deal attack damage, while abilities and items may deal separate spell damage instances. Damage type is another layer: physical, magical, and pure describe defensive interaction rather than whether the source was an attack or an ability.
