Damage Block
Damage block is a defensive mechanic that subtracts or prevents a defined amount of qualifying incoming damage before that damage reaches the unit’s health.
What is Damage Block in Dota 2?
Damage block reduces incoming damage under the rules of the specific block source. The most familiar form is physical damage block against attacks, but Dota 2 also contains other block categories and special cases. The important feature is that block removes a concrete portion of a damage instance rather than scaling the whole instance in the same way as armor or magic resistance.
Order matters in Dota 2’s damage calculation. Some block effects occur before later mitigation, while others are processed at different stages. That means the practical value of a block depends on the incoming hit and the rest of the target’s defenses.
How Damage Block is used in a match
Flat physical damage block is especially effective against repeated smaller attacks because the blocked amount represents a larger share of each hit. Against one very large hit, the same block value may be much less significant.
Players consider damage block when choosing which target to attack and when comparing attack speed with raw hit size. A hero that relies on many modest attacks can feel a block effect more strongly than a hero dealing fewer, heavier attacks.
Do not confuse Damage Block with...
Damage block is different from armor. Armor modifies physical damage through a scaling resistance calculation, while block removes a defined amount from qualifying damage. A barrier has a separate capacity that is depleted as it absorbs damage.
