Damage Reflection
Damage reflection is a mechanic that creates damage back toward a source or attacker in response to damage being dealt to the reflecting unit.
What is Damage Reflection in Dota 2?
Damage reflection turns incoming damage into a retaliatory damage instance. The exact amount and trigger depend on the source of the reflection effect, but the core idea is consistent: damaging the protected unit can cause the damage dealer to take damage in return.
Reflected damage is handled as its own game event with special rules that prevent endless reflection loops. Current mechanics also distinguish reflected damage from ordinary attacks or spells for several interactions. Because individual reflection sources can behave differently, the term describes the common mechanism rather than one universal formula.
How Damage Reflection is used in a match
Reflection punishes opponents for committing large amounts of damage without checking defensive effects first. It can make a high-damage hero hesitate, stop attacking temporarily, use defensive tools, or wait until the reflection effect expires.
Teams also use reflection as a deterrent. Even when it does not secure a kill directly, it can reduce the enemy’s willingness to focus a protected target during a critical part of a teamfight.
Do not confuse Damage Reflection with...
Damage reflection is not the same as damage reduction. A reflection effect can return damage while the original target still takes some or all of the incoming damage. Damage block and barriers instead reduce or absorb damage before it reaches health.
