Debuff
A debuff is a harmful status effect applied to a unit, reducing its effectiveness through penalties such as slows, damage over time, reduced stats, silence, or other restrictions.
What is Debuff in Dota 2?
A debuff is a negative effect placed on a hero or another unit. Debuffs can reduce movement, lower combat stats, deal damage over time, reveal a target, or restrict actions through mechanics such as silence, disarm, or break. The exact behavior belongs to the individual effect rather than to the word “debuff” itself.
Some debuffs can be removed with a basic or strong dispel, while others are harder or impossible to remove in the usual way. A debuff can also remain useful even when it does not fully disable a target; a small slow or damage penalty may be enough to change positioning or force an early retreat.
How Debuff is used in a match
Teams use debuffs to make targets easier to kill, reduce their damage, control their movement, or stop them from using a key resource at the right moment. In lane, a debuff can make a trade unfavorable. In a teamfight, several different debuffs can overlap and gradually remove a hero’s ability to fight effectively.
Players also watch for dispels before committing important debuffs. Applying a long-lasting negative effect immediately before the target removes it can waste a major cooldown, while forcing the dispel first may create a better opening.
Do not confuse Debuff with...
A debuff is broader than a disable. A disable specifically prevents or restricts actions, while a debuff may simply reduce a stat or apply another harmful effect. A debuff is also the opposite of a buff, which benefits the affected unit.
