Detection
Detection is the practical term for tools and effects used to reveal, expose, or track invisible enemy units and wards so they can be targeted or removed.
What is Detection in Dota 2?
Detection is a broad gameplay concept rather than one single status effect. It includes True Sight sources and other reveal mechanics that help a team deal with invisibility or hidden wards. Different detection tools have different areas, durations, risks, and vision requirements.
Because invisibility denies normal targeting and information, detection converts hidden threats back into actionable information. It can reveal an approaching hero, expose a ward that controls an objective, or make an invisible target vulnerable to direct spells and attacks.
How Detection is used in a match
Teams buy and place detection when the enemy has important invisible heroes, invisibility items, or active ward control. The best detection is usually positioned before the fight begins, not after an invisible hero has already escaped.
Detection also has an economic and positional cost. Wards can be destroyed, carried detection can be lost, and using a reveal in the wrong area may leave another objective exposed. Supports often manage much of this work, but any role may need to contribute when the situation demands it.
Do not confuse Detection with...
Detection is broader than True Sight. True Sight is one specific reveal mechanic, while “detection” describes the overall set of tools and effects used to find invisible enemies or wards. Normal Observer vision alone does not reveal ordinary invisibility.
