Deward

2 min readWinio Team

Dewarding is the act of finding and destroying enemy wards to remove their vision or detection and regain control of the surrounding area.

What is Deward in Dota 2?

To deward means to remove an enemy Observer Ward, Sentry Ward, or another ward-type vision source after locating it. The action usually requires the ward to be revealed or otherwise targetable before it can be attacked and destroyed.

Dewarding is part of the wider vision battle. Removing one Observer Ward can hide rotations and objective setups, while destroying a Sentry can restore the usefulness of invisibility or protect your own nearby ward from being found.

How Deward is used in a match

Players deward around objectives, entrances, high-ground areas, and common ward spots to deny information before a move. A successful deward can make a smoke movement safer, hide a Roshan attempt, or force the enemy to enter an area without reliable vision.

Blindly placing detection everywhere is inefficient. Good dewarding combines map-reading with information about where enemies have recently played, where they could safely place wards, and which locations are strategically valuable.

Do not confuse Deward with...

Dewarding is not the same as placing a Sentry Ward. A Sentry or other reveal can help find enemy wards, but dewarding is the actual process of locating and removing them. Warding creates information; dewarding denies it.
