Dodge is the act of avoiding an incoming attack, projectile, ability, or dangerous effect through movement, timing, repositioning, or another defensive action.

What is Dodge in Dota 2?

In combat, to dodge means to avoid an enemy action rather than simply survive its damage. A player may step out of a skillshot, move behind terrain, use a mobility spell before an effect connects, become untargetable, disjoint a projectile, or otherwise make the enemy action fail to produce its intended result. The exact method depends on the threat being avoided.

The term is broader than one formal game mechanic. Players can say that someone “dodged a stun” even when the escape came from movement, a blink, an immunity window, or another interaction. In matchmaking discussion, “dodge” can also mean trying to avoid a particular player or game situation, but the core gameplay meaning is avoiding an incoming threat.

How Dodge is used in a match

Dodging is most valuable when the enemy action is predictable enough to react to. A player may watch a cast animation, projectile path, or opponent movement and then sidestep or use a mobility tool at the last possible moment. Good dodging preserves resources because the player avoids both the immediate effect and any follow-up that depended on it.

Teams can also create room for a dodge. A support may force the enemy to cast from a worse angle, while a core holds a blink or defensive item until the threatening spell is committed. The important decision is whether to spend a defensive resource now or keep it for a more dangerous ability later.
