Draft

A draft is the hero-selection stage before a Dota 2 match, where teams build their lineups through picks and, in some modes, bans.

What is Draft in Dota 2?

Draft describes the process of choosing the heroes that will form each team’s lineup. The exact rules depend on the game mode: some drafts give individual players direct control over their own picks, while captain-led modes use organized pick and ban phases. In every case, the draft shapes lanes, damage types, control, scaling, objective pressure and the matchups that the teams will play.

A strong draft is not simply a list of individually powerful heroes. The five picks need workable roles, enough resources for their cores, ways to start or survive fights, and a plan for different stages of the game. Drafting also involves information: every revealed hero tells the opponent something about possible lanes and strategy.

How Draft is used in a match

Teams may open with flexible heroes to hide lane assignments, save a core pick until later, or ban a hero that would counter an intended strategy. In pubs, drafting is less centralized but the same principles still matter when players coordinate roles and avoid creating a lineup with five heroes that all need the same farm.

The draft continues to influence decisions after the game starts. A lineup built for early pressure may need to force objectives before a greedier enemy draft reaches its stronger item timings.

Do not confuse draft with build. The draft selects the team’s heroes before the match; a build is the combination of items, skills and talents chosen for a hero during or around the match.

First Pick

First Pick means the side or draft position that makes the first hero selection in a pick-and-ban sequence.

Having first pick changes the order in which information is revealed during a captain-led draft. The side choosing first can secure a highly contested hero immediately, but the opponent then receives later opportunities to answer that choice within the draft structure. The strategic value of first pick depends on the current pick-and-ban order, hero pool and metagame, so FP is best understood as draft-order terminology rather than a permanent advantage.
