Fog of War

Fog of War is the part of the Dota 2 map your team cannot currently see because no allied vision source is revealing it.

What is Fog of War in Dota 2?

Dota 2 does not show every enemy movement in real time. Areas outside allied vision are covered by Fog of War, hiding enemy heroes, most units and many actions until something gives vision there. Heroes, allied creeps, towers, wards and other map elements can reveal areas, while terrain and elevation can limit what a vision source actually sees.

Fog of War is one of the game’s core information systems. A team can know that an enemy entered an unseen area without knowing exactly where that hero went afterward. This uncertainty creates opportunities for ganks, Roshan attempts, smoke movements, split pushes and defensive escapes.

How Fog of War is used in a match

Good teams constantly ask what can and cannot be seen. A support may place a ward before an objective so opponents cannot approach through fog without being detected. A core may farm a wave only when nearby paths are visible, then retreat once enemy heroes disappear from the map.

Players also use fog offensively. Moving through unseen terrain can hide an initiation angle, and breaking enemy vision can make a retreat much harder to follow. Controlling Fog of War is therefore closely tied to wards, Watchers and overall macro decisions.

Do not confuse Fog of War with...

Fog of War is a lack of vision, not invisibility. An invisible hero can stand inside an area your team otherwise sees and still require detection; a visible hero inside Fog of War is hidden simply because your team has no vision there.
