Fountain
The Fountain is the protected area inside each base where allied heroes respawn, rapidly restore health and mana, and can retreat from danger.
What is Fountain in Dota 2?
Each team’s Fountain sits in its respawn area at the back of the base. Heroes start the game there, return there after death, and can rapidly restore health and mana while inside its protective area. The Fountain also attacks enemy units that enter too deeply, making it one of the most dangerous places to chase opponents.
The Fountain is part of the base but is not the structure that determines victory. Its purpose is recovery, respawning and base defense. The older term well may still appear in historical Dota vocabulary, but Fountain is the standard modern name.
How Fountain is used in a match
A hero may return to the Fountain when staying on the map would be too risky or when a full reset is more valuable than using smaller regeneration resources. During base defense, players can briefly retreat toward the Fountain, recover, and re-enter the fight with more health and mana.
Attackers have to respect Fountain range during deep pursuits. Chasing a low-health defender too far can turn a won fight into unnecessary deaths, especially when the defending team is about to respawn or buy back.
Do not confuse Fountain with...
The Fountain is not the Ancient. The Ancient is the final structure that must be destroyed to win; the Fountain is the team’s respawn and regeneration area.
