Gank

A gank is a planned surprise attack on an enemy hero, usually using a rotation or numbers advantage to create a favorable fight before the target can react.

What is Gank in Dota 2?

Gank is a common Dota 2 term for an attempt to catch and kill an enemy hero by surprise. A gank often involves one or more heroes leaving their usual area, approaching through fog or an unexpected route, and creating a short-lived numbers advantage around the target. A successful gank can produce gold and experience, but its larger value is often the space or map control created afterward.

A gank does not require a specific number of attackers and does not have to start from a lane. What matters is the setup: the attackers try to reach a target under favorable conditions before the enemy team can respond.

How Gank is used in a match

Players gank when a target is exposed, when a key disable or damage spell is ready, or when another part of the map offers a good rotation window. Vision and missing information are central to the tactic. If an enemy support disappears from lane, the other lanes may play more cautiously because a gank could already be developing.

For example, a midlaner can clear the wave, move through fog toward a side lane, and combine with the two allied heroes already there. The temporary three-versus-two situation may secure a kill and then turn into pressure on a tower.

A gank is a targeted surprise attack, while a teamfight is a broader engagement involving larger parts of both teams. Roaming describes movement around the map as a playstyle; a gank is one possible result of that movement.

Naix Bomb

Naix Bomb is a classic gank setup in which Lifestealer travels inside an allied hero with Infest and emerges when the ally reaches a target.

The tactic hides Lifestealer's approach and combines the carrier's mobility or initiation with Lifestealer's immediate presence in the fight. The name comes from Naix, an older name associated with Lifestealer. The exact best setup depends on the current hero abilities and patch.
