Hard Support (Position 5)
Hard Support, or position 5, is the support role with the lowest usual farm priority, focused on enabling teammates, vision, utility and safe team development.
What is Hard Support (Position 5) in Dota 2?
Hard Support is the common name for position 5 in Dota 2. The role usually starts by helping the position 1 hero through the laning stage and then contributes through vision, defensive play, disables, saves, smoke movements and other team utility. Position 5 normally receives less safe farm than every other role because the lineup gains more from directing those resources toward its cores.
Low farm priority does not mean the role should avoid every creep or item. A hard support still needs levels and can take resources that would otherwise be wasted. The important distinction is priority: when a safe wave or valuable camp is available to a core who needs it, position 5 generally gives way and finds lower-risk or lower-priority income elsewhere.
How Hard Support (Position 5) is used in a match
A position 5 player often manages the lane around the carry, contests pulls, secures vision and keeps enough resources available to participate in the next team move. Later, the role may stand in dangerous areas first, protect more valuable teammates from initiation, or spend time setting up wards before an objective.
Because the role is resource-light, deaths and positioning matter greatly. A hard support that survives long enough to cast multiple spells, place vision or save a core can have enormous impact without a large net worth.
Do not confuse Hard Support (Position 5) with...
Do not confuse Hard Support with Soft Support. Both are support roles, but position 5 usually has lower farm priority, while position 4 tends to have more freedom to move and obtain early utility items.
