Health (HP)

Health, or HP, is the life resource of a Dota 2 unit. Damage lowers current health, healing restores it, and a unit dies when its health reaches zero.

What is Health (HP) in Dota 2?

Health represents how much damage a unit can survive before dying. The interface distinguishes current health from maximum health: current health changes during combat, while maximum health defines the size of the health pool available at that moment.

For heroes, maximum health is strongly connected to Strength and can also be modified by items and abilities. Health regeneration is related but separate: it describes how quickly lost health returns over time rather than how large the health pool is.

How Health (HP) is used in a match

Players constantly judge fights through current and effective health. A hero with a large maximum pool may still be an easy target when already low, while a hero with less raw HP can be difficult to kill if armor, Magic Resistance, barriers, healing, or escape tools are available.

Health also affects risk management outside fights. Staying on the map with low HP can preserve tempo, but it may make the hero vulnerable to a gank or long-range damage. Returning to safety sacrifices time in exchange for restoring the resource.

Do not confuse Health (HP) with...

Health is not the same as Effective HP. Health is the actual HP pool shown by the game. Effective HP estimates how much incoming damage may be required to remove that pool after defenses are considered.
