Hex

2 min readWinio Team

Hex is a strong disable that transforms the target into a harmless critter while preventing attacks, active abilities, and active item use and heavily limiting normal movement.

What is Hex in Dota 2?

Hex is a composite control effect rather than a single narrow restriction. While hexed, a unit is disarmed, silenced, and muted, so it cannot attack, cast active hero abilities, or use active items. The target is also transformed into a critter and its normal movement is heavily constrained by the hex effect.

Hex does not automatically apply break, so passive abilities generally continue functioning unless another effect disables them. That distinction matters against heroes whose survivability or damage depends on passives.

How Hex is used in a match

Teams use hex to immediately remove a dangerous hero from the fight without giving that player time to use a defensive item or mobility spell. It is especially valuable against targets that could otherwise react to a stun with an item as soon as the stun ends.

Because hex is such complete control, overlapping it carelessly with another long disable can waste valuable duration. Coordinated teams often use it as either the opening catch or the follow-up control in a chain.

Do not confuse Hex with...

Hex is not the same as stun. Both can create a near-complete control window, but hex is built from silence, mute, disarm, and movement restriction rather than the stun status itself. Hex also does not normally disable passive abilities, which is what Break does.
