Macro
Macro is the strategic management of the whole Dota 2 map: waves, objectives, farm, vision, rotations and where each hero should be over time.
What is Macro in Dota 2?
Macro describes decisions that affect the team’s position across the map rather than the execution of one spell or one short fight. It includes which lanes are pushed, who takes which farm, where vision is placed, when heroes group, which objective is worth contesting, and how the team responds to enemy movement.
Strong macro turns small advantages into larger ones. A team that wins a fight can use the time to push a lane, place deep wards, capture a nearby structure and take safer farm instead of wandering without a plan. The concept applies to both team coordination and an individual player’s understanding of the wider game state.
How Macro is used in a match
A macro decision might be sending a hero to clear a dangerous side lane while four teammates hold a safer area, or giving up one tower because defending it would expose the team to a worse fight. Teams also use macro to trade objectives: if the enemy commits several heroes to one side of the map, the other side can become available for a push or neutral objective.
Good macro depends on information. Fog of War, ward coverage, teleport availability, wave positions and enemy respawn states all change which map decision is safest.
Do not confuse Macro with...
Macro is different from micro. Micro focuses on precise control of a hero, units, spells and items in short interactions; macro focuses on the larger map, resources and strategic sequence of decisions.
