Magic Resistance

2 min readWinio Team

Magic Resistance is a defensive stat that changes how much magical damage a unit takes. Higher resistance reduces magical damage; negative resistance can increase it.

What is Magic Resistance in Dota 2?

Magic Resistance is the primary resistance stat for magical damage. Heroes and units can gain or lose it through their base properties, attributes, items, abilities, auras, and debuffs. The stat is applied as part of the magical damage calculation, so the same spell can remove different amounts of health from two targets.

Magic Resistance is separate from spell immunity and debuff immunity. A unit can have high magical resistance and still be affected by abilities, while an immunity effect can change targeting or status interactions in ways that resistance alone does not.

How Magic Resistance is used in a match

Players value Magic Resistance when the opposing lineup depends heavily on magical damage. Increasing it can turn a lethal spell combination into survivable damage and give time to use a save, heal, or escape.

Reducing an enemy’s Magic Resistance has the opposite effect and can improve a team’s magical burst. As with armor, the correct defensive choice depends on the actual damage profile of the enemy rather than on one hero’s reputation.

Do not confuse Magic Resistance with...

Magic Resistance is not spell immunity or debuff immunity. It changes magical damage taken; it does not by itself prevent abilities from targeting the unit or stop status effects from being applied.
