Magical Damage
Magical damage is a main Dota 2 damage type that is reduced by magic resistance and can be absorbed by magical damage barriers.
What is Magical Damage in Dota 2?
Magical damage is one of the three primary damage types in Dota 2. It is frequently produced by hero abilities and item effects, although the source of damage and its type are separate concepts. A spell can deal physical, magical, or pure damage depending on its rules.
When magical damage reaches a target, magic resistance is one of the main defenses that reduces it. Magical damage barriers can absorb qualifying damage before it reaches health. Other generic damage modifiers may also change the final result, so magical damage should not be treated as a fixed amount that always removes the same amount of HP.
How Magical Damage is used in a match
Magical damage is often important in early and mid-game fights because many abilities can deliver reliable damage before heroes have large inventories. Teams also use magical burst to punish targets whose defenses are focused on armor rather than magic resistance.
As the match develops, players watch for defensive items, buffs, barriers, and immunity effects that can make a previously easy magical kill much harder. A good spell sequence therefore depends on timing and target selection, not only on the listed damage of each ability.
Do not confuse Magical Damage with...
Magical damage is not the same as spell damage. Spell damage describes a source category, while magical describes a damage type. Some spells deal physical or pure damage, and some attack-related effects can create magical damage.
