Mana

Mana is a resource used to pay the cost of most active abilities and some item effects. A hero with insufficient mana cannot use actions that require more mana than is available.

What is Mana in Dota 2?

Mana is the blue resource pool used by most heroes to cast abilities and activate certain effects. Like health, it has current and maximum values. Casting an ability usually removes its mana cost from the current pool, while regeneration and restoration effects refill mana over time or immediately.

Intelligence is a major source of maximum mana and mana regeneration for heroes, while items and abilities can modify both. Not every game action requires mana, so having an empty mana pool does not necessarily make a hero completely unable to fight, but it can remove important parts of the hero’s toolkit.

How Mana is used in a match

Mana management is a major part of laning and teamfighting. Spending mana for small advantages can be correct, but arriving at an objective without enough mana for a key disable, escape, or ultimate can make a hero far less useful.

Players therefore plan around both current mana and future regeneration. A support may save enough mana for one defensive spell, while a core may delay a fight until a resource-restoring item or regeneration cycle makes the full combo available.

Do not confuse Mana with...

Mana is not a cooldown. Mana is a spendable resource; cooldown is the time before an ability or item can be used again. A spell can be off cooldown but still unusable because the hero lacks mana.
