What is MMR in Dota 2?

MMR is a rating that represents a player's estimated skill for matchmaking. The system uses rating information to help build matches between players of comparable ability, while other matchmaking criteria may also be considered. In ranked play, winning generally increases MMR and losing generally decreases it.

MMR is related to rank medals, but the two are not identical concepts. MMR is the underlying numerical rating, while a rank is a displayed competitive tier or medal. Ranked rules, confidence or uncertainty systems, leaderboard thresholds, and special Immortal matchmaking rules can change over time, so exact thresholds should always be treated as version-dependent.

How MMR is used in a match

Players use MMR as shorthand for ranked skill level: phrases such as "5k MMR" describe a rating range rather than a hero statistic from one match. MMR also appears in discussions about calibration, leaderboard placement, party matchmaking, and how difficult a ranked pool is.

A single match can change a player's rating, but MMR is meant to reflect performance across many games rather than one strong or weak result. This is why short winning or losing streaks can move the number without redefining every aspect of a player's skill.

Do not confuse MMR with...

MMR is the numerical rating. Rank is the visible competitive tier connected to ranked progression. Calibration is the process used to establish or re-establish a player's rating with sufficient confidence.

Average MMR

Average MMR is the mean matchmaking rating of a group of players, such as a team, lobby, or match.

The phrase is used to summarize the approximate skill level of a group rather than any one player. It can appear in community discussion, tournament eligibility rules, analytics, or matchmaking-related context. Whether a client or service displays this value depends on the feature being used.

PTS

PTS is informal shorthand for rating points when players discuss MMR gains, losses, or totals.

PTS does not describe a separate rating system. It is simply a way some players refer to points attached to their matchmaking rating, especially in short chat messages or community discussion.

Double Down

Double Down is a ranked feature that, when available, increases both the potential MMR gain and the potential MMR loss from a selected match.

Double Down is a higher-risk use of the ranked rating system, not a separate queue or rank. Its availability, distribution, and exact rules have changed across events and updates, so current conditions should be checked before relying on it.
