Mute
Mute is a status effect that prevents the affected unit from using active item abilities while normally leaving hero abilities, movement, attacks, and passive effects available.
What is Mute in Dota 2?
Mute is the item-use counterpart to silence. While muted, a hero cannot activate items, including item abilities that would otherwise provide movement, defense, dispels, or control. Hero abilities are not blocked by mute unless another status effect is present at the same time.
Mute does not generally disable passive item bonuses or passive hero abilities. It also does not erase effects from items that were already activated before the mute, although channeling item actions can be interrupted.
How Mute is used in a match
Mute is especially dangerous when a hero depends on an active defensive item to survive initiation. Applying it before the target can react can remove a major escape or protection option and make follow-up damage much more reliable.
Because a muted hero can still cast hero abilities, teams often pair mute with other control when they need a complete shutdown. Against some heroes, however, removing item access alone is enough to create the decisive window.
Do not confuse Mute with...
Mute in this glossary means the gameplay status effect that blocks active item use. It is different from muting another player’s chat or voice communication. Silence blocks active hero abilities, while Break disables passive ability components.
