Offlane
Offlane is a team’s hard side lane, where the natural creep meeting point is less protected by the team’s own tower than it is on the safe lane.
What is Offlane in Dota 2?
Each team has one safe side lane and one offlane. For Radiant, the offlane is on the top side; for Dire, it is on the bottom side. The geometry makes the early creep meeting point relatively farther from the offlane team's Tier 1 tower and closer to the opponent's side, which is why the lane is also called the hard lane or long lane.
The name describes the lane, not a mandatory style of hero. Modern lane pairings can include an offlaner and support, and teams may swap lanes or change how aggressively they play the area. The consistent idea is the side-lane orientation relative to each team's base and early defensive tower.
How Offlane is used in a match
The offlane side often tries to contest the enemy carry's farm while still securing enough experience and resources for its own heroes. Pull camps, creep aggro and pressure on the wave are used to prevent the lane from sitting permanently in the opponent's safest position.
After the early stage, the word offlane can still be used as a map direction even when the original offlaner is no longer there. Teams may push the offlane wave before moving to an objective or use it as a route for pressure into the enemy side of the map.
Do not confuse Offlane with...
Offlane is the lane; offlaner is the position 3 role. Safe lane is the opposite side-lane orientation for the same team. “Hard lane” and “long lane” are common alternate names for offlane.
