Offlaner (Position 3)

An offlaner, or position 3, is a core who usually begins in the offlane and is commonly expected to create pressure, start fights or provide a durable frontline.

What is Offlaner (Position 3) in Dota 2?

Offlaner is the common name for position 3. The role usually begins on the offlane against the enemy safe-lane setup and receives the third-highest resource priority in the traditional position system. Modern offlaners are not required to lane alone, and the role is broader than simply being a tank. Depending on the draft, position 3 may initiate, buy team utility, summon units, push lanes, control areas or become an additional damage source.

A good offlaner turns limited early resources into space and reliable team value. Many position 3 heroes become dangerous after a key level or first major item, allowing the carry to continue farming while the offlaner joins active moves.

How Offlaner (Position 3) is used in a match

During the lane, an offlaner tries to secure experience and useful farm while making the enemy carry work for resources. After the laning stage, the hero often occupies aggressive parts of the map, pushes difficult waves or stands at the front of smoke movements.

When a team lacks initiation, the offlaner may prioritize a mobility or control item. In another draft, the same position may buy auras or defensive tools instead. The role is therefore defined by resource priority and map responsibility, not one mandatory item build.

Do not confuse offlaner with offlane. Offlane is the lane; offlaner is the position 3 player or role that commonly begins there.
