Power Spike

A power spike is a point when a hero or lineup becomes noticeably stronger because of a new level, ability, item or combination of resources.

What is Power Spike in Dota 2?

Power spike describes a temporary or lasting increase in practical fighting strength. A hero may spike after unlocking an ultimate, completing a major item, reaching a talent or gaining enough levels for a key ability combination. Team-wide spikes can also appear when several heroes finish important items at roughly the same time.

The idea is relative rather than absolute. A hero can be stronger than before without being stronger than every opponent. What makes a power spike strategically important is that the new resource changes what the hero can threaten: a kill becomes possible, an objective can be taken faster or a defensive problem is finally solved.

How Power Spike is used in a match

Teams plan moves around power spikes by delaying or accelerating fights. A core that is a few hundred gold away from a major item may avoid a risky engagement until the purchase is complete. Conversely, a team that has just finished several key items may smoke immediately before the opponent reaches its own timing.

Recognizing the enemy's spike matters as much as using your own. If an opposing hero has just completed an item that changes the matchup, continuing to play as if nothing changed can turn a previously favorable fight into a loss.

Do not confuse Power Spike with...

Do not confuse power spike with late game. A power spike can happen at any stage of the match, while late game describes a broader phase of highly developed heroes and high-stakes objectives.
