Proc

A proc is the moment when a conditional or chance-based effect successfully triggers, such as a critical strike, bash, extra attack effect, or other programmed event.

What is Proc in Dota 2?

Players use “proc” as a verb or noun: an effect can proc, or a successful activation can be called a proc. The effect may be random, pseudo-random, guaranteed after a condition, or tied to a regular trigger. The important idea is that a stored rule or chance has activated and produced its effect.

Proc does not describe the effect itself in detail. A crit proc increases attack damage, a bash proc applies control, and another proc might create an extra hit or secondary effect. The triggering system and the resulting effect are separate parts of the mechanic.

How Proc is used in a match

Players track procs when they affect reliability. A hero may need one bash proc to stop an escape, one crit proc to finish a target, or a repeated attack proc to accelerate damage. When the effect is chance-based, the team cannot know the exact trigger timing and must account for uncertainty.

The term is also useful when discussing interactions. If an attack “does not proc” an effect, it means that attack does not trigger the conditional mechanic even if it still deals its normal damage.

Do not confuse Proc with...

Proc does not mean RNG. RNG describes randomness as a system, while a proc is the actual activation of a conditional effect. A proc can even be deterministic if the trigger condition guarantees it.
