Pub

A pub is a public matchmaking game in Dota 2, played through the normal queue rather than as a privately arranged scrim or official tournament match.

What is Pub in Dota 2?

Pub is short for public game or public match. In Dota 2, players use it for ordinary matchmaking games where teammates and opponents are assembled through the public queue. A pub can be ranked or unranked, and the player can enter alone or as part of a party depending on the queue.

The word describes the matchmaking environment rather than a single game mode. Turbo can be a pub, and a ranked All Pick match can also be a pub. What matters is that the game is part of public matchmaking rather than a private practice lobby or scheduled tournament series.

How Pub is used in a match

Players often contrast pub play with professional or team practice. A strategy that works in a coordinated scrim may be harder to execute in a pub because players have less shared preparation, while an individual hero may dominate pubs because it punishes common communication or positioning mistakes.

Expressions such as “pub build,” “pub player” or “works in pubs” all use the same idea: the context is ordinary public matchmaking rather than organized team competition.

Do not confuse Pub with...

Do not confuse pub with solo queue. A pub can include parties, while solo queue specifically means the player entered matchmaking without a party.
