Pure Damage
Pure damage is a main Dota 2 damage type that normally bypasses armor and magic resistance, making it useful against targets whose protection relies on those defenses.
What is Pure Damage in Dota 2?
Pure damage is one of Dota 2’s three primary damage types. Unlike physical damage, it is not normally reduced by armor, and unlike magical damage, it is not normally reduced by magic resistance. This makes pure damage especially consistent against targets that have invested heavily in those two defenses.
Pure does not mean that every pure damage instance is absolutely impossible to prevent or modify. Generic damage negation, immunity rules, and source-specific interactions can still matter. The important glossary distinction is that the standard physical and magical resistance systems do not provide their usual protection against pure damage.
How Pure Damage is used in a match
Players value pure damage when an opponent is difficult to kill through conventional defensive stats. It can also make a hero’s damage profile harder to itemize against because simply buying more armor or magic resistance does not solve the problem.
In a fight, however, pure damage still has to be delivered. If the source is on cooldown, can be interrupted, requires a specific condition, or cannot reach the target, the theoretical advantage of the damage type does not guarantee a kill.
Do not confuse Pure Damage with...
Pure damage is not “unblockable damage” in every possible situation. It specifically bypasses the normal mitigation from armor and magic resistance. Other forms of damage prevention, negation, or source-specific immunity can still apply.
