RNG

RNG, short for Random Number Generation, is the general term for Dota 2 mechanics whose result is partly determined by a random or probability-based outcome.

What is RNG in Dota 2?

RNG covers many different kinds of randomness. A mechanic may roll whether an effect occurs, choose a value from a range, select between several outcomes, or determine a random position or spawn. The rules around that randomness are still fixed even though the individual result is uncertain.

Not all chance-based mechanics use the same distribution. Some outcomes are independent from one attempt to the next, while others use pseudo-random distribution to reduce long streaks of successes or failures. “RNG” is therefore the broad category, while TRD and PRD describe different ways random outcomes can be distributed.

How RNG is used in a match

Players manage RNG by planning around probabilities rather than expecting one exact outcome. If a kill depends on a chance-based proc, a safer player keeps another option available in case the proc does not happen. Over many attempts, the listed chance matters more than one unusual streak, but a single fight can still be affected by a lucky or unlucky result.

Good play reduces unnecessary dependence on randomness. Positioning, backup disables, extra damage, and conservative resource use can all turn a risky percentage into a more reliable plan.

Do not confuse RNG with...

RNG is the broad idea of random outcomes. PRD is one system used to distribute some chance-based events, and a proc is the actual triggering of an effect. Random does not mean ruleless.

True Random Distribution (TRD)

True Random Distribution (TRD) describes random checks where each equivalent attempt is independent of the previous results.

Under a true random or memoryless model, a previous success or failure does not change the probability of the next equivalent check. This can produce long streaks because the system does not compensate for recent outcomes. Dota 2 also uses other random models, including pseudo-random distribution for selected mechanics, so TRD should not be assumed for every chance-based effect.
