Roaming
Roaming is the act of leaving a fixed lane to move around the map, usually to create a numbers advantage, secure vision, pressure enemies or assist teammates.
What is Roaming in Dota 2?
Roaming describes active movement between lanes and objectives instead of remaining in one farming area. A roaming hero may appear on another lane for a gank, protect a rune, place deep vision, contest an objective or simply force opponents to play more cautiously because the hero is missing. Supports, especially position 4, are often associated with roaming, but any role can roam when the game state makes the move worthwhile.
The cost of roaming is lost lane presence. Leaving too early or without a clear purpose can give the opponent free farm and experience. Effective roaming therefore depends on wave position, vision, hero power spikes and whether teammates can use the temporary numerical advantage.
How Roaming is used in a match
A support may roam after stabilizing its lane, moving toward mid as a rune spawns or following a smoke to another part of the map. A midlaner can also roam after quickly clearing a wave, creating pressure before returning for the next important set of creeps.
Even a roam that does not produce a kill can be useful if it secures a ward, forces an enemy teleport or protects a teammate. The key question is whether the movement creates more value than staying in the original lane.
Do not confuse Roaming with...
Do not confuse roaming with rotation. The terms overlap, but rotation can describe any planned movement between areas or objectives, while roaming usually emphasizes repeated active movement and pressure across lanes.
