Roshan
Roshan is Dota 2's major neutral boss objective. Defeating him gives Aegis of the Immortal and can provide additional rewards as the match progresses.
What is Roshan in Dota 2?
Roshan is a powerful neutral unit that teams fight for as a major map objective. His most important reward is Aegis of the Immortal, which gives its holder a one-time return to life after dying while the Aegis is active. Later Roshan kills can provide additional rewards, making repeated Roshan control increasingly valuable.
Roshan becomes stronger over the course of the match and returns after being killed. His exact pit behavior, movement, reward sequence, and other details can change between gameplay updates. In the current map, Roshan moves between pits as the day-night cycle changes, so teams must account for his location before setting up the objective.
How Roshan is used in a match
Teams usually attempt Roshan when they have enough damage and enough map control to finish the objective before the enemy can contest it. Common windows appear after winning a teamfight, forcing important enemy heroes to another side of the map, or establishing vision that makes an approach difficult.
Taking Roshan is not only about killing the boss quickly. Teams also need to watch entrances, protect the hero carrying key resources, and decide whether to fight an approaching opponent or finish Roshan first. A successful Roshan can create a strong timing for pushing high ground or taking another important fight.
Do not confuse Roshan with...
Roshan is different from the Tormentor. Both are neutral objectives, but they have different mechanics, rewards, locations, and strategic purposes. Aegis of the Immortal is a Roshan reward, not the name of the objective itself.
