Silence

Silence is a status effect that prevents a unit from using active hero abilities while the effect lasts, while normally leaving attacks, passive abilities, and active item use available.

What is Silence in Dota 2?

Silence blocks active hero abilities for its duration. A silenced hero can normally continue moving and attacking, and can still use active items unless another effect also applies mute. Passive abilities remain active unless a separate break effect disables them.

Silence also interrupts abilities that are currently being channeled. Effects from abilities that were already successfully cast generally continue unless their own rules say otherwise. This makes silence powerful against spell-dependent heroes without being a complete shutdown of every action.

How Silence is used in a match

Silence is commonly used after initiation to stop an escape spell, defensive ability, or counter-initiation. It can also be used before a fight begins, forcing a target to rely on attacks and items until the effect ends or is removed.

Because silence does not normally block items, players may still have ways to survive or remove the effect. Teams therefore consider whether the target has a dispel or defensive item before treating silence as a guaranteed kill window.

Do not confuse Silence with...

Silence prevents active hero abilities; mute prevents active item use; break disables passive ability components. Hex can apply several of these restrictions together. A silenced hero is not automatically disarmed and can usually keep attacking.
