Snowballing

Snowballing is the process of turning an early advantage into a larger one by repeatedly converting kills, map control and resources into further pressure.

What is Snowballing in Dota 2?

Snowballing happens when success makes the next success easier. A hero that gains early kills can finish items sooner, use that strength to win another fight and then take more of the map, creating a cycle of increasing advantage. The term can describe one hero or an entire team.

A snowball is not guaranteed simply because a team is ahead. The leading side still needs to convert its advantage without giving away high-value deaths. Overaggressive dives, poor objective choices or splitting farm badly can stop the cycle and give the opponent room for a comeback.

How Snowballing is used in a match

Teams snowball most effectively when they connect actions. A won lane leads to a tower, the tower opens access to deeper wards, the vision creates a pickoff, and the pickoff creates another objective. Each step reduces the opponent's safe space while increasing the leader's farm and information.

Players also use the word for heroes whose kits become especially oppressive after an early lead. Such heroes may move between lanes, force supports to rotate defensively and deny the enemy cores the time they need to recover.

Do not confuse snowballing with farming. Farming builds strength by collecting resources; snowballing specifically describes compounding an existing advantage through successful pressure and conversions.
