Soft Support (Position 4)
Soft Support, or position 4, is a support role with relatively flexible movement and resource priority, often focused on playmaking, control and early map activity.
What is Soft Support (Position 4) in Dota 2?
Soft Support is the common name for position 4. The role usually starts alongside the offlaner and has more freedom than position 5 to move around the map or build an early utility item. Position 4 heroes often provide disables, burst damage, initiation or other tools that become useful quickly without requiring the farming priority of a core.
The term describes resource priority, not a rigid job description. A position 4 may spend the early game protecting the offlaner, securing runes, stacking camps, placing vision or moving to mid. In some drafts the role is highly active; in others it stays in lane longer because the matchup demands it.
How Soft Support (Position 4) is used in a match
Teams expect position 4 to look for high-value opportunities without taking the safest farm from cores. A successful early move might force a teleport, secure a kill or help a core take control of a lane. Later, the role often buys utility or initiation tools that let it start fights or save teammates.
Because position 4 usually has more resources than position 5, its item timing can be strategically important. However, that extra farm is situational and should not come at the cost of a core’s stronger timing.
Do not confuse Soft Support (Position 4) with...
Do not confuse Soft Support with Hard Support. Position 4 usually has more freedom to roam and obtain utility items, while position 5 generally has the lowest farm priority and a stronger responsibility for supporting the carry and team vision.
