Stun
A stun is a disable that prevents the affected unit from moving, attacking, casting abilities, or using items for the duration of the effect.
What is Stun in Dota 2?
Stun is one of the most complete forms of crowd control in Dota 2. When a unit is stunned, its current actions are interrupted and it cannot perform normal movement, attacks, ability casts, or item use until the effect ends. Passive abilities are not automatically disabled simply because a unit is stunned.
Stuns can come from hero abilities, items, attack effects, and other game mechanics. Their duration and interaction with status resistance or immunity depend on the specific source. Because a stun removes most immediate responses, even a short stun can be enough to interrupt a channel, prevent an escape, or create time for follow-up damage.
How Stun is used in a match
Teams use stuns to start fights, stop mobile heroes, interrupt channeling, protect allies, and keep a target in range for follow-up damage. Good stun usage is often about timing rather than simply casting as soon as possible. A support may hold a stun until an enemy begins an escape, while an initiator may use it immediately to create the opening for the team.
When several allies have stuns, they try to avoid wasting them at the same moment. Sequencing control so that the next stun begins as the previous one ends can keep a target disabled for much longer.
Do not confuse Stun with...
A root stops movement but usually allows more actions than a stun. Silence prevents ability casting but normally still allows movement, attacks, and item use. Hex is another strong disable with its own rules and is not simply another name for stun.
Chain Stun
Chain stun means using multiple stuns in sequence so the target has little or no time to act between them.
A clean chain stun requires teammates to stagger their control instead of overlapping every stun at once. The next disable is timed near the end of the previous one, extending the total period in which the target cannot respond. The exact sequence depends on cast times, durations, status resistance, and the abilities available in the fight.
